Lab Safety Rules
- Follow written and verbal directions carefully. Note any special warnings. Read all of lab prior to beginning lab.
- Check labels on chemical containers. MSDS are found in the MSDS notebook.
- Familiarize yourself with the location and use of all safety equipment (eye wash station, gas shut-off switch, fire extinguishers, etc).
- Never eat, drink, or chew gum in the science laboratory.
- Never run, roughhouse, or engage in inappropriate behavior of any kind in the lab. Inappropriate behavior will result in loss of laboratory privileges for a specified length of time or expulsion from the laboratory. Loss of lab privileges will result in a lower grade.
- Accidents do happen. Report any accident, injury, incorrect procedure and/or broken /damaged equipment immediately (even if the accident/ problem is minor!).
- Any time chemicals or heat are used, you will be required to wear laboratory goggles (even if not directly involved in the experiment). Aprons will also be provided.
- If you get chemicals in your eyes flood the area immediately with water at the eye wash station for 15 minutes. Report to the teacher immediately.
- Flush acid/base spills on skin with copious amounts of water. Clothing may need to be cut away.
- Use extra care when working with heat, open flame, or chemicals.
- Dress properly: no loose hair, baggy clothing, dangling jewelry, or open-toed shoes.
- Keep lab area free of unnecessary materials. Leave backpacks and books at your table. Push in your chairs.
- Never perform unauthorized experiments. This will result in disciplinary action.
- Do not return unused chemicals to their original container. Be careful not to switch lids.
- Hot glass does not look any different from cool glass. Place the back of your hand close to the glass to determine its temperature.
- Test for odors by wafting air towards you with the source at arms length.
- Dispose of waste in the provided containers or as instructed. Broken glass goes in the broken glass container.
- Clean your work area and return equipment to its proper place. Leave lab areas clean and dry.
- Do not touch chemicals with your hands. Keep your hands away from your eyes, face and clothing. Wash your hands before leaving the laboratory.
- Use your common sense and always ask questions if there is something you don't understand!
