Tides and intertidal zones
-
Giant waves that make water levels rise. Caused by:
- the gravitational attraction of the moon and sun.
- centriptal forces of the Earth-moon system.
- "Waves" produced as the Earth rotates beneath bulges in the oceans.
- When sun and moon align, a set of extreme tides are produced called spring tides.
- When sun, moon and Earth form a right angle then lower tides called neap tides result.
-
Tidal patterns are the number and height of high tides and low tides per day. These depend on
- latitude (simple)
- shape of the basin or coast (very complex)
- Intertidal zones
