Tides and intertidal zones

1. Giant waves that make water levels rise. Caused by:
   • the gravitational attraction of the moon and sun.
   • centriptal forces of the Earth-moon system.
2. "Waves" produced as the Earth rotates beneath bulges in the oceans.
3. When sun and moon align, a set of extreme tides are produced called spring tides.
4. When sun, moon and Earth form a right angle then lower tides called neap tides result.
5. Tidal patterns are the number and height of high tides and low tides per day. These depend on
   • latitude (simple)
   • shape of the basin or coast (very complex)
