Plate Speed

Danger - plate speed highly variable here - redo before giving to students

Directions:

  1. The map shows locations of six volcanoes on the Hawaiian Islands and their approximate age in millions of years (my).
  2. Use this map and scale to measure the distance between the volcanoes. Note: it is often fastest and more accurate to determine a scale factor for the map and use this for your distance estimates. Use the scale to determine the distance (in km) that 1 cm represents on this map. Measure the map distances in cm and use proportions to solve for the actual distance.
  3. From the information on the map calculate the difference in age of the volcanoes.
  4. Calculate the speed the plate was moving for the time interval between volcanoes.
