Plate Speed
Danger - plate speed highly variable here - redo before giving to studentsDirections:
- The map shows locations of six volcanoes on the Hawaiian Islands and their approximate age in millions of years (my).
- Use this map and scale to measure the distance between the volcanoes. Note: it is often fastest and more accurate to determine a scale factor for the map and use this for your distance estimates. Use the scale to determine the distance (in km) that 1 cm represents on this map. Measure the map distances in cm and use proportions to solve for the actual distance.
- From the information on the map calculate the difference in age of the volcanoes.
- Calculate the speed the plate was moving for the time interval between volcanoes.
