Virtual Earthquake
In this assignment, you will be visiting an interactive Internet web site to examine seismograms of an earthquake of your choosing. Using the tools provided at the web site, you will;
- Estimate the distance to the earthquake from three locations.
- Use these three distances to find the epicenter of the earthquake.
- Use the distances and amplitude readings from the seismograms to estimate the Richter Scale reading.
- When you have successfully completed the task, fill out the virtual seismologist form on the web site and print your virtual seismologist certificate. You will turn in this certificate to the instructor.

You can access this site from any computer with Internet connection. Type the address carefully, pay attention to which letters are capitalized.
Steps to Success:
- Don't Panic !It's exactly what we have been doing in class. Everything you need is on the web site. The web site guides you step by step. You can always use the web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc) to go back one or several steps.
- Follow the directions given and use the skills you learned in class. If you don't make accurate measurements on the first try, the program will prompt you to try again.
- When you have successfully completed the earthquake analysis, you'll be asked to type in your name so you can get a certificate. When the certificate is on the screen, go to "FILE" on the web browser and choose "PRINT."
- Turn in your Virtual Seismologist Certificate to get credit for the assignment.
